Answer by orang31na
I’ve heard this before. I believe it applies mainly when the person washing the dishes by hand lets the hot water run the entire time they’re washing.

washing dishes by hand vs. dishwasher

www.permies.com This is a demonstration of washing a load of dishes using just a gallon of water. Dishwashers typically use 15 gallons of water although energy efficient dishwashers use 9 gallons. And they do a crappy job. I’m using the dishwasher as a dish drying rack.

Which is more “eco-friendly” – handwashing dishes or running the dishwasher?

Question by greeneyes51572: Which is more “eco-friendly” – handwashing dishes or running the dishwasher?
With hand washing, it is water and soap but probably more water than the dishwasher. However, the dishwasher took energy and resources to create, uses electricity every time and will need to be broken down to be recycled after it’s life cycle.

Answer by campbelp2002
It takes energy to pump and purify water, and to manufacture and deliver soap. And it takes more energy to collect waste water from your sink and clean it before dumping it in a river. So everything has an impact on the environment.

Most experts say the dish washer is better, or at least not worse.

Dishwasher: does the water efficiency outweigh the energy used to heat the water?

Question by eyeballmouth: Dishwasher: does the water efficiency outweigh the energy used to heat the water?
I know using a dishwasher saves water, but I’m trying to decide if it is worth it since it uses so much hot water and electricity has to be used for that. What do you think? Does the benefit balance the loss?
I’m more concerned about wasting energy than money, by the way…

I would definitely “google” consumer reviews/reports with your question. You need facts derived from tested data.

Answer by sophiejane
It is said that it is more eco-friendly to use the dishwasher, provided you take care of the following:

-don’t pre-rinse
-use eco cycles
-wash with a full load

Question by Anthony M: Would i save energy and money if I directly use solar hot water in my dishwasher?
My great.. dishwasher use cold water, so it needs a lot of electric energy to heat it.

I would can directly use hot water from solar panels.

Would it be convenient?

Answer by linlyons
clearly, the hotter the water, the more you save.
i don’t understand why that would be a question.
when you use cold water, do the dishes come out clean?
many washers don’t heat the water — the heating coils are only used in the dry cycle.

you’d probably not want to use water directly from the solar panels.
you’d get a little hot water, and the rest cold — it wouldn’t have time to heat.
you want a tank so that the water can continuously circulate and gather energy all day.
that would work far better.

considering how expensive it is to heat water, i’m a big fan of solar hot water.
